Description | Cartoon shows Senator William Borah of Idaho holding a basket full of question marks that look like snakes. Men (each labeled "Candidate") flee in all directions. Borah, looking puzzled, asks, "Wonder if they think these are snakes?" Borah was a flamboyant maverick Republican who frequently found himself at odds with his party. During the 1928 presidential campaign, Borah sent questionnaires to all the Republican candidates asking them to declare their positions on the controversial issue of Prohibition. |
