Description | Cartoon shows Former President Coolidge standing in a ramshackle farmyard. He ruefully surveys the disorder, asking, "Why do things choose to run down?" Outside the fence, two yokels watch. The younger says, "Dad, you reckon there'll ever be another president from here?" His father responds, "Same ol' Cal." After he retired from the presidency, Coolidge made his home in Massachusetts, but he spent some summers in his childhood home in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where his father had run a country store. Coolidge was widely viewed as a simple country man, although he had long left his rural roots behind. Berryman may be commenting on Coolidge's strong belief that the government should not interfere in economic affairs. This view had come under attack as the Great Depression that had begun in 1929 worsened. |
