Description | Cartoon shows Vice President Charles Dawes sitting back in his chair, smoking a pipe, and musing, "What Senatorial timber they are!" He holds a paper reading: "Washington preacher talks to his congregation 12 hours -- then is surpassed by a Los Angeles minister going 20 hours." Dawes was well-known for his impatience with long winded speakers and meetings and as his first act as vice president had attempted to persuade the Senate to change its rules to prevent filibustering. The attempt went nowhere. |
