Description | Cartoon shows President Calvin Coolidge, sitting in a chair holding a paper reading "Premier Mussolini Pats Lion's Head and Changes Growls to Purrs." In his mind's eye, he sees Congress as an unkempt old man with a mane of unruly hair, glaring at a sheet of paper reading "Administration Policies." The President says, "I must cultivate Mussolini's method." On March 24, 1925, the papers reported that Mussolini had visit the Rome Zoological Gardens where he had fondled and played with his pet lion. Berryman suggests that Coolidge, who had continual disagreements with Congress, must wish he could emulate the Italian dictator who not only petted wild animals but also had firm control over his government. |
