Description | Cartoon shows Dame Democracy as a sideshow employee handing out cigars to New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt and former Secretary of War Newton Baker from a box labeled "Our 10 Cent Winner." A sign reads "Come On -- Aim at the Mark! You May Win a Good Cigar." The sideshow is a game in which patrons try to hit a battered man (labeled "League of Nations") with a ball. The man has already been hit by two balls: one ball labeled "It's Not My Kind of League, F.D. Roosevelt"; the other, "This Is No Time to Talk League, N.D. Baker." In the 1932 presidential election, Roosevelt and Baker were running for the Democratic and Republican nominations respectively. Both men had strongly supported American participation in the League of Nations, but in 1932, sensing the growing isolationist feeling in the country, they repudiated their earlier positions. |
