He is surrounded by fallen blocks of stone labeled "European Civilization." The caption alludes to the Biblical story in which Samson, a man of legendary strength, imprisoned by his Philistine enemies, pulled down the pillars of the temple, killing everyone including himself. On July 13, 1944, a German radio broadcast warned that before allowing the enemy to invade its heartland, the Germans would plunge all of Europe into a "maelstrom of destruction."
