Description | World War II cartoon shows a startled Hitler, gazing out the window at the shadows of eight soldiers hanging from the gallows. Over them all hangs an empty noose. Shortly after the failed effort to assassinate Hitler in July 1944, eight of his top officers were tried, convicted, and hung. This was only the beginning of a massive campaign of retribution in which thousands were executed or sent to concentration camps. Berryman suggests that the hangings may presage the fate that awaits Hitler as well. |
