Description | Cartoon shows Vice President Henry Wallace and Democratic National Committee Chairman Robert Hannegan in their pajamas on their hands and knees, in front of a fireplace hung with empty stockings, gazing up the chimney. Both Wallace, whose term as Vice President was about to expire and Hannegan, who had ably managed Roosevelt's 4th reelection campaign, hoped that the president would name them to his cabinet in the new administration. Roosevelt did indeed appoint Wallace as Secretary of the Interior, but Hannegan had to wait for his appointment until after Roosevelt's death the following April. Ironically, Hannegan was one of the Democratic leaders instrumental in denying Wallace renomination for Vice President. |
