Description | World War II cartoon shows Senator Arthur Vandenberg leading an apprehensive G.O.P. elephant across a narrow plank (labeled "Mackinac Foreign Relations Plank") to the "G.O.P. Platform." He says, "Come on, old girl, if it can hold me, it can hold you." Although they supported the war effort, a significant number of isolationist Republican leaders remained suspicious of the idea of the United States participating in a postwar international governmental organization. The party convened a conference on Mackinac Island in September 1943 and produced a declaration, prepared by Vandenberg (himself a former isolationist), that supported future international cooperation in the most general terms. Vandenberg was instrumental in having the 1944 Republican convention adopt a foreign policy plank in line with the Mackinac Declaration. |
