Description | Cartoon shows House Minority Leader Joe Martin looking in surprise at the GOP elephant, clad in a frilly dress and pantaloons, standing on a chair, staring fearfully at a little Mickey Mouse labeled "Wisconsin Primary." When Wendell Willkie, the popular liberal lawyer who had been the Republican presidential candidate in 1940, decided to try to gain the Republican nomination again in 1944, it made the party regulars nervous. Willkie spent much of his time during the Wisconsin primary attacking conservative Republican leaders and policies. He was decisively defeated, however, and withdrew from the race. Berryman plays with the notion that both women and elephants were afraid of mice. |
