Description | Cartoon shows long-time Congressman Hamilton Fish being booted out of the "Dewey-Bricker Lodge." Former Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie and Vice President Henry Wallace look on, Wallace commenting, "Over my way they let 'em down easier." In the 1944 political conventions, Willkie was passed over when Governor Thomas E. Dewey received the Republican nomination for president, and Wallace was refused a renomination for Vice President by the Democrats. Berryman suggests that Fish received even harsher treatment when Dewey announced that he would not support his Republican colleague's campaign for re-election to Congress. Dewey charged that Fish had made anti-semitic statements, but the problem was exacerbated by Fish's strong isolationist stance prior to World War II. |
