Description | World War II cartoon shows John Q. Public, with a smile on his face, dreaming about United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis. In the dream, Lewis bangs on the entrance to a room in which Uncle Sam sits working, a sign on his desk reading, "Quiet! Don't Disturb the WAR Effort." In the second part of the dream, Uncle Sam has picked up Lewis and is about to throw him out the door labeled "Exit." In the spring of 1943, the UMW went on strike, in part over the "portal-to-portal" issue. Lewis demanded that miners be paid from the time they entered the mine to the time they left, rather than just for the time spent mining. Berryman reflects the feeling of many members of the public that Lewis's activities were harming the war effort. |
