Description | World War II cartoon shows Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau consoling John Q. Public by telling him that he can have copper pennies again. On the wall, a sign shows a list of new problems and disasters, "Rail Strike Vote Nears, Coal Strike Spread, Tax Plan Defeated, [and] Jelly and Jam Rationed." On October 22, 1943, the Treasury Department announced that it would stop minting zinc/steel pennies because they were so often confused with dimes. The new pennies would be an alloy made from materials in used shell casings and some copper. |
