Description | World War II cartoon shows an angry Mussolini, dressed as an ancient Roman, smashing a violin over Hitler's head. In the background explosions blow up "Axis" railroads in Rome. On July 19, the Allies bombed Rome for the first time, a significant blow to Italian morale. There were reports that Mussolini had asked the Germans in vain for more aid. Berryman suggests that Mussolini must be viewing Hitler as another Nero, fiddling while Rome burns. |
