Description | World War II cartoon shows Harrison E. Spangler, chairman of the Republican National Committee, talking to Frank Walker, chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Both men, dressed in informal clothes, stand at the edge of a race track. Behind them, an elephant watches in surprise as President Roosevelt runs by, carrying a donkey in the direction of the "Next Event, Presidential Handicap." Spangler tells Walker, "If you want me to agree to short race, you've got to get rid of that jockey." In 1943, the parties were already beginning to prepare for the 1944 presidential election. On April 1, Walker urged that in view of the war effort, the two parties agree to hold late nominating conventions and conduct short campaigns. Spangler responded that the Republicans would agree if the President would agree not to run for an unprecedented fourth term. The Democrats, naturally, refused the offer. |
