Description | World War II cartoon shows five government officials standing around a table, looking in horror at a large paper labeled "Invitation to Dinner." Senator Albert Chandler says, "Don't touch it! Call the F.B.I." Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox says, "I'm going to have Naval Intelligence investigate this thoroughly." Senator Warren Austin says, "I'm not going unless Styles Bridges goes." Senator Styles Bridges says, "It's a New Deal trick -- watch your step." Major General Levin H. Campbell says, "I'v [sic] got to tell G-2 about this now." In May 1943, manufacturer's broker (or lobbyist) John P. Monroe told the House Military Affairs Committee, which was investigating abuses in government procurement, that dinners for prominent government officials in his house on R St. were not "orgies or drinking parties with lewd women." Chandler, Knox, Austin, Bridges, and Campbell were among those rumored to have attended. |
