Description | World War II cartoon shows Hitler as a juggler, juggling vases labeled "Internal Unrest," "Russian Front," "Italian Front," and "Bombing of Germany." A shattered vase, labeled "Hope of Split among the Allies," lies at his feet. In the corner lies Mussolini, who says bitterly, "And that's not the first thing Der Fuehrer has dropped either." By November 1943, things were not going well for Hitler. The Russians had sì³®ded in driving the Germans out of much of the Soviet Union; the Allies had invaded Southern Italy, and Mussolini had been dismissed as head of government, only to be rescued by Hitler and made head of a rump puppet state in Northern Italy; the Allies were bombing Germany by both day and night; and there were rumors of growing opposition to Hitler inside Germany. In addition, the meeting of the foreign secretaries of Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union in Moscow had destroyed any hope that the Germans might be able to negotiate a separate peace with Russia. |
