Description | World War II cartoon shows industrialist Henry J. Kaiser hard at work building toy ships. War Production Board head Donald M. Nelson protests, "He's not obeying our priority rules," but Maritime Commission head Emory Scott Land responds, "Maybe not, but he's turning out the ships." Kaiser's shipyards outstripped all others in the speed with which they produced much needed shipping. He built 30 percent of the country's shipping in 1943, completing Liberty ships in 56 days, but he accomplished this in part through his disregard for procedures and priorities. |
