Description | World War II cartoon shows Uncle Sam, holding a paper reading "Tea Sales Cut 50% by W.P.B.," talking to Leon Henderson, head of the Office of Price Administration and Donald M. Nelson, head of the War Production Board. In the background, three hags labeled "Hate, Fear, [and] Suspicion" stir a caldron labeled "Disunity." Uncle Sam says, "Now if you boys could order a 100% cut in that BREW, and drive out those cooks, we would be getting somewhere." In March 1942, the WPB ordered retailers to cut sales of tea by 50%, presumably because of the fear that the war in the Pacific would reduce availability. Berryman suggests that the government should focus on more important problems facing the home front. |
