Description | World War II cartoon shows a two-part picture. At the top, George Washington is shown with one of his soldiers standing in the snow at Valley Forge by a small fire. At the bottom is a banquet table laden with food and plates with signs reading "Paid $100." A fund raising solicitation reads "George Washington Committee for the District of Columbia. We are enclosing pledge card. Upon receipt of your contribution of $100, or more, or an initial contribution of $50 we shall invite you to be present to celebrate the termination of our drive for funds for the Democratic National Committee and the birthday of our First President. You are urgently requested to respond promptly to this appeal -- or else!" Berryman contrasts unfavorably the way Washington celebrated his birthday at Valley Forge in 1778 with what he considers to be the excesses, in time of war, of the Democrats in using the anniversary of his birthday in 1942 for a fundraising banquet. |
