Description | World War II cartoon shows Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, standing on the shore in front of an ocean filled with sinking ships, talking to Uncle Sam. Knox says, "The Navy has sunk three submarines and damaged four in the Western Atlantic. We kept it secret until now -- to hurt enemy morale." Uncle Sam responds, "I'm not sure you're helping mine by not KEEPING it a secret." The cartoonist's signature small bear huddles terrified behind Uncle Sam's legs. On February 25, 1942, Knox announced submarine sinkings since January of that year. He also said that it was Navy policy not to make such information available if it would be useful to the Germans. Despite these sinkings, German submarines continued to wreak havoc with Allied shipping. |
