Description | World War II cartoon shows President Roosevelt as Little Jack Horner sitting in front of a large pie labeled, "DFB, EOB, OPA, OPM, PD, OCD, [and] SPAB." He proudly exhibits the plum, Donald M. Nelson, that he has plucked from the pie. As the United States prepared for war, Roosevelt had been unwilling to centralize the economic mobilization effort, instead setting up a handful of competing and overlapping agencies generally known by their initials. With the entry of the U.S. into the war, Roosevelt finally tried to consolidate the effort to some extent by naming Nelson as head of a new War Production Board. Nelson was only partially successful and was criticized for lack of forcefulness, especially in dealing with the military. |
