Description | World War II cartoon shows Japanese Emperor Hirohito questioning his perspiring advisors, who hold different objects: a model of a plane, a world globe showing Australia and Tokio, an American-Japanese Dictionary, and a paper reading "Report of Damage." Hirohito complains, "But I say to you again, please: WHY do they call him Doolittle?" In an effort to retaliate after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States, on April 18, launched a single bombing raid on Japan, led by Colonel James Doolittle, using planes launched from an aircraft carrier. The bombers then flew on to China. All but 9 of the 80 crew members survived. The mission had little military significance, but the news raised American morale. |
