Description | World War II cartoon shows Hitler as a delivery man carrying a parcel labeled "Birthday Present for Marshall Mannerheim," knocking on the door of a house labeled "Finland." Inside, Mannerheim can be seen about to cut a birthday cake. On the porch of the house next door, Secretary of State Cordell Hull (shown as a housewife) tells a little boy (labeled "Procope"), "You'd better run next door and tell them to soak that package in water. It may be a bomb." During the war, Finland sided with Germany against the Soviet Union. On June 4, Hitler flew to Helsinki to personally present the Grand Cross of the German Order of the Eagle to Finnish Field Marshall Gustav Mannerheim on the occasion of his 75th birthday. The United States had not broken off relations with Finland, but Hull warned Finnish minister Hjalmar Johan Procope that the visit was an effort "to compromise Finland further in the eyes of the anti-Axis world." |
