Description | World War II cartoon shows men walking off with the possessions of John Q. Public. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes siphons gas from his car; Office of Price Administration head Leon Henderson takes his rubber soled shoes and the tires off his car; Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau takes his wallet; and two other men take his typewriter and a bag of sugar. A barefoot John Q. Public, his pockets turned out, flexes his muscles defiantly and says, "Oh, boy! Can I take it!" With American entry into the war, the government instituted a variety of programs to raise money and save vital materials. Berryman suggests that the American public will respond appropriately to the crisis. |
