Description | World War II cartoon shows Uncle Sam polling those members of his cabinet not directly concerned with defense, saying, "We want to cut down on non-essential activities. So only those whose work is absolutely essential to the war will raise their hands." All the members raise both hands. Members include: Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard, Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, Secretary of Commerce Jesse Jones, Secretary of Interior Harold Ickes, Attorney General Francis Biddle, and Postmaster General Frank C. Walker. At his January 30, 1942 press conference, Roosevelt jokingly suggested that in order to relieve overcrowding in Washington, non-defense people, or "parasites," should be asked to leave. |
