Description | World War II cartoon shows King Christian X of Denmark handing over a small boy (labeled Geeenland) into the care of Uncle Sam. In 1940, Germany invaded and occupied Denmark and in March 1941 extended its "war zone" to Greenland, a Danish possession. The Danish minister to the United States then signed an agreement with Secretary of State Cordell Hull authorizing the U.S. to protect Greenland for the duration of the war. A few days later, the Nazi-dominated Danish government repudiated the agreement, but the U.S. Coast Guard patrolled the Greenland coast for the rest of the war. |
