Description | World War II cartoon shows Secretary of State Cordell Hull, seated at his desk, reading a document that says, "Order. Won't recognize U.S. bases in Greenland. Danish Foreign Office." Hitler skulks behind the document. The caption refers to the Biblical story in which Jacob puts goatskin on the backs of his hands to fool his blind father into thinking he is his more hirsute elder brother Esau and thereby obtain the blessing intended for Esau. After the Germans invaded Denmark, the United States signed an agreement with Greenland, a Danish possession, allowing the U.S. to build bases to protect the island. The Nazi-controlled Danish government refused to recognize the agreement. |
