Description | Cartoon shows Federal Mediator James F. Dewey and John Q. Public gazing at a locked factory gate bearing a sign reading "Closed by Fourth Wildcat Strike." Dewey says, "This is sabotage!" while John Q. says, "Right -- This isn't the first time!" Local union leaders at the Great Lakes Steel Corporation called a wildcat strike in October 1941, despite a proposed wage increase that exceeded wages throughout the steel industry. Dewey was outraged. The strike ended a few days later when the parent union warned the strikers that the Army would take over the plant. This was one of a rash of strikes in the defense industry in 1941 that threatened the nation's rearmament program. |
