Description | World War II cartoon shows a frightened Turkish man holding a paper reading "Hitler wants use of Turkish territorial waters, but has NO OTHER demands." The floor around him is littered with other papers reading "I have ordered my air force to attack only military objectives. A. Hitler," "The Sudentenland is the last territorial claim I have in Europe. A. Hitler," "The Danzig Agreement has removed all friction between Germany and Poland. A. Hitler," and "This pact with Russia guarantees peace in the East. A. Hitler." On August 27, the Associated Press reported that Hitler had warned Turkey that it might need to use Turkish waters in the Black Sea. Turkey was striving to remain neutral, and Hitler's record of broken promises was not reassuring. Hitler never carried through on this threat, however, and Turkey was able to maintain its neutral status until February 1945, when Germany was on the point of defeat. |
