Description | Cartoon shows Senator Tom Connally welcoming a man in a sombrero (labeled W. Lee O'Daniel) to the Senate, saying, "Senator, don't try to organize a hill-billy band here. Nobody in there wants to do anything but beat the bass drum." O'Daniel, who was elected to the Senate in 1941 to complete the term of Morris Sheppard who had died in office, was a radio performer and singer and founder of the Hillbilly Flour Company. Cartoon signed: "Dear Tom Connally. Maybe you can get Lee to join us Alfalfians while you are our 'first' Alfalfian! C.K. Berryman." The Alfalfa Club was a social organization made up of prominent members of the Washington political establishment. Connally was First Vice President in 1941. |
