Description | World War II cartoon shows John Bull kicking Mussolini out of a large building labeled "Mussolini's East African Empire." Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie posts a sign reading "Reopening under Original Management -- Haile Selassie." A piece of paper reads "Last Italian Stronghold in Ethiopia Falls." When Italian forces invaded Ethiopia in 1935, the League of Nations' failure to take steps to stop Mussolini's aggression signaled its ineffectiveness as an international peace keeper. After World War II began, the British defeated the Italian forces in Ethiopia, and Haile Selassie regained his throne. This was one of Britain's first military successes and an example of the generally inept performance of the Italian armies during the war. |
