Description | Cartoon shows John Q. Public using bellows to fan a fire while a group of men give varied advice on how to do it. Henry Morgenthau, Secretary of the Treasury says, "Buy defense bonds." President Roosevelt says, "Watch out for Nazi propaganda," while isolationist Senator Burton K. Wheeler urges, "Watch out for Roosevelt." Robert Patterson, Undersecretary of War, holds a sign reading "Give to U.S.O. Fund," and Fiorello La Guardia, head of the Office of Civil Defense, holds a sign reading "Register for Home Defense." In 1941, as the threat of involvement in the world war loomed, the country remained divided on how to meet the challenge. "Keep the home fires burning" was a popular song during World War I. |
