Description | World War II cartoon shows Uncle Sam and a Japanese man frozen in blocks of ice with signs labeled "U.S. Freezes Japan," and "Japan Freezes U.S." Other signs read "Dutch Freeze Japanese," and "All Credits Frozen." John Q. Public (labeled "Taxpayer") sits propped up against one block, perspiring profusely and saying "Wish somebody'd freeze me." In the summer of 1941, tensions between Japan and the United States rose when the Japanese sent troops into southern Indo-China. The United States, Great Britain, and the Netherlands East Indies froze Japanese assets and the Japanese retaliated with a freeze on American assets. Meanwhile, the United States, mounting a massive national defense build-up program, raised taxes to new levels. |
