Description | Cartoon shows Senators Robert La Follette, Jr., Sheridan Downey, Claude Pepper, and John Thomas in a jalopy labeled "The Pension Special. Have One on Us," speeding in the direction of "National Bankruptcy." They carry a flag reading, "New Pension Scheme, $30 a Month for Everybody over Sixty. Costs Only $4,000,000,000 a Year -- Come One -- Come All." A little man labeled "Taxpayer," barely jumps out of the way. In August 1941, a special Senate Subcommittee, chaired by Senator Downey, recommended that social security pensions be replaced by a system providing $30 a month to all unemployed persons over 60. Committee members La Follette, Pepper, and Thomas supported the proposal, but it failed to pass the Senate. |
