Description | World War II cartoon shows Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, Secretary of the Army Henry L. Stimson, and former presidential candidate Wendell Willkie as soldiers in the front lines of the trenches. Far to the rear, in front of the White House, President Roosevelt calls out, "Let me know, boys, when the time has come for the Democrats to get into action." All through the spring of 1941, Roosevelt looked for a way to increase American support for beleaguered Great Britain, but he feared taking steps that might alienate the American public or bring the country into war. Knox, Stimson, and Willkie, all Republicans, fearlessly bucked the leaders of their own party and called for decisive action. |
