Description | Cartoon shows Canadian Prime Minister MacKenzie King nailing down a wooden ceiling holding down coiled springs labeled "Rents," "Wages," "Farm Prices," and "Commodity Costs." King tells Leon Henderson, head of the U.S. Office of Price Administration, "You've got to bring them all under the ceiling, Leon. We tried the piece-meal system and it doesn't work." Henderson, holding a paper reading "U.S. Plan to Control Prices with Farmers and Labor Excluded," looks on in surprise. In August 1941, President Roosevelt backed a price control bill which would stabilize prices but not wages. Under strong pressure from the agricultural interest, many farm product prices were also exempted. Berryman suggests that the United States should emulate the Canadians who had just adopted a plan for complete control of all wages and prices. |
