Description | Cartoon shows Leon Henderson as King Canute, sitting on the shore on his throne, commanding a small wave labeled "Prices" to keep back. Behind him a huge wave labeled "Wages," threatens to crash over his head. Canute was a Danish king, who according to legend, commanded the tide not to come in. In 1941, President Roosevelt appointed Henderson to head the newly-created Office of Price Administration, set up to try to control inflation arising from the national defense effort. Berryman suggests that the problems of rising wages outweigh those of rising prices and that efforts to control either are futile. |
