Description | Cartoon shows steel industrialist Myron Taylor, sweating profusely as he leaves a room labeled "Lewis-Taylor Conference." Clouds of smoke pour out of the room. In 1941, as the country endeavored to build its national defense in the face of impending war, labor strikes threatened to slow the effort, in particular a strike by the United Mine Workers. In an effort to ward it off, Taylor met with the fiery UMW head, John L. Lewis. Lewis eventually agreed to call off the strike. Taylor also served as President Roosevelt's representative to the Vatican, a mission that Berryman saw as considerably less hazardous than a meeting with Lewis. |
