Description | A Christmas Eve cartoon showing five men asleep in bed in front of a fireplace on which are hung five little stockings. A sign above their heads indicates they have little to expect from Christmas. All five men suffered severe political losses in the 1940 presidential election. Wendell Willkie and Charles McNary were the defeated Republican candidates for president and vice president, while Joe Martin was chairman of the Republican National Committee. Labor leader John L. Lewis bolted the Democratic Party, announced his support for Willkie, and promised to resign as president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) if President Roosevelt won, a promise he was forced to keep. The fifth man, Vice President John Nance Garner, failed to gain the Democratic nomination for president and abandoned politics. |
