Description | Cartoon shows James Farley, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, wearing a ribbon reading "1940 Chicago," chairing a meeting of enthusiastic Roosevelt supporters carrying signs reading, "We Want Roosevelt," "F.D.R. Again," and "Just Roosevelt." Farley looks longingly out the window at a group of men playing sandlot baseball. At the 1940 Democratic Presidential Convention, Farley had hoped for the nomination, but the delegates overwhelmingly supported President Roosevelt for an unprecedented third term. Disappointed and bitter, Farley resigned his party offices and his cabinet position as Postmaster General. |
