Description | Cartoon shows Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Flynn as Paul Revere, racing through town on a donkey, ringing a bell. The surprised faces of President Roosevelt and Dame Democracy appear at the windows. In October 1940, Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie abruptly shifted the tenor of his campaign and began accusing Roosevelt of warmongering. Roosevelt's approval ratings began to sink in the polls, and Flynn began sending in alarmist reports of defections among Italian and German voters. With his supporters beginning to panic, the president abandoned his aloof campaign stance and gave five fiery speeches, winning the November election by a comfortable margin. |
