Description | Cartoon shows President Roosevelt and Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie as two battered prize fighters in the ring. Roosevelt says this will be his last fight and Willkie responds, "They can't even draft you?" In the background, their managers, Ed Flynn and Joe Martin, stand ready to revive them. Willkie, himself, had been picked over experienced Republican politicians when the Republican convention "drafted" him. The ensuing campaign, in which Roosevelt ran for an unprecedented third term, was held against the back drop of the first year of World War II. In response to the growing war threat, on October 29, the United States held its first peace time draft. This cartoon was drawn the day before the election, which Roosevelt went on to win handily. |
