Description | Cartoon shows Vice President John Nance Garner as an old cowboy riding a donkey, carrying a rifle and a fishing rod, heading out of town as the sun sets. When President Roosevelt ran for a third term in 1940, he dumped Garner, an old-time Texas politician and former Speaker of the House, in favor of the young liberal, Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture. Garner, who had become critical of Roosevelt's New Deal policies, retired from politics and went back home to Texas. |
