Description | Cartoon shows President Roosevelt in an open car laden down with luggage labeled "What We Did for Farmers," "Opposition Orators," "What We Did for Workers," "The Evil Republicans," "What We Did for Defense," and "What We Did for Social Security." Behind him, Ed Flynn, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, lugging a huge trunk labeled "Why I'm Running for a 3d. Term," calls, "Hey, Chief, you forgot this one!" Roosevelt responds, "Leave it at home, Ed. It's too big to carry." During the last days of the 1940 presidential campaign, Roosevelt focussed on the progress that his administration had brought to the country, ignoring the troublesome fact that he was violating tradition by running for a third term. |
