Description | Four-panel World War II cartoon shows a man labeled "House," holding an old gun labeled "Conscription," tiptoeing up the entrance to a cave labeled "Hitler." As he nears the cave, a little bird cheeps, "Tweet, tweet, remember Nov. 5th!" The man drops his gun and runs, but Uncle Sam blocks his way saying, "Go on back and pick up your gun!" In the summer of 1940, as Hitler's troops overran Europe, Americans began to realize that if the United States were to defend itself, military conscription would be necessary. Congressional leaders were wary, especially in the light of the upcoming presidential election in November. Berry excoriates these timid politicians. In mid-September, Congress finally passed a bill authorizing the country's first peacetime draft. |
