Description | Cartoon shows labor leader John L. Lewis thanking President Roosevelt for the ride in his buggy, as he prepares to board the flashy Wendell Willkie Bandwagon. By 1940, there was no love lost between Roosevelt and the mercurial Lewis, who felt that the Democrats had not rewarded the labor unions sufficiently for their support. It still came as a shock, however, when Lewis endorsed Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie late in October 1940 and promised that if Roosevelt won, he would resign as head of the CIO. When Roosevelt won handily, Lewis was forced to honor his pledge. |
