Description | Cartoon shows Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie using bellows to pump smoke from a fire into a hole at the base of a tree, forcing President Roosevelt to poke his head out of a hole further up for air. Roosevelt says "Flynn says I've got to make five speeches." Willkie says, "I told you I'd smoke him out!" Edward J. Flynn was national chairman of the Democratic Party during the 1940 presidential campaign. Much to Willkie's frustration, Roosevelt stayed aloof from the campaign, emphasizing the importance of his role as Commander in Chief. Not until late in the campaign, when Willkie began to picture him as a warmonger, did Roosevelt announce that he would deliver five campaign addresses. The speeches were fiery and effective, and Roosevelt went on to win handily. |
