Description | Cartoon shows Uncle Sam, dressed as an American soldier, playing dice on a table labeled "Mexico," with Mexican president Venustiano Carranza. Uncle Sam, holding a dice box labeled "U.S." prepares to pick up the dice labeled "A, R, M, [and] Y." Carranza says, "Put 'em back in the box," while Uncle Sam responds, "How long is this to keep up?" In 1916, the United States sent an Army expedition into Mexico in futile pursuit of Mexican rebel Pancho Villa who had raided and burned an American town. Carranza protested and early in 1917, President Wilson reluctantly ordered the American troops withdrawn. |
