Description | Cartoon shows seven Democratic politicians: Senators Burton K. Wheeler and Bennett Champ Clark, Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of State Cordull Hull, Federal Security Agency Chief Paul V. McNutt, Postmaster General James A. Farley, and Vice President John Nance Garner, each announcing, "I am the logical candidate." Meanwhile, Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes, holding a picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, says, "I don't believe those fellows know the first principles of logic!" Through 1939 and the first half of 1940, Roosevelt refused to announce whether he would run for an unprecedented third term, actually encouraging the aspirations of a number of members of his administration. Ickes, on the other hand, was one of the first to jump on the "third term" bandwagon. |
